Bald Tires May Be Damaging Your Car: 3 Problems to Worry About

If your tires look worn and you know you need to replace them, putting it off can cause serious and costly problems to the vehicle. The tires in poor condition aren't just at the risk of popping while you're driving down the road, but they could be a threat to society.

Talk with a tire retailer to get a quote to have new tires put on, and make future appointments to have the tires rotated regularly. Here are a few of the potential problems you could have if you don't replace bald tires.

Traction and Safety Problems

If the tires are wearing they aren't going to grip the road well. Any time you go to stop suddenly, accelerate or make a turn, the tires may fail to work and cause your vehicle to slide around, fish tail, or smash into something. This is going to cause safety concerns for you and for others on the road, and even for pedestrians.

Damage the Transfer Case

The transfer case is a computer system that sends power from the transmission to both the front and rear axles of the vehicle. If one of the tires is rotating at a different speed than the others because it's wearing unevenly, the transfer case doesn't know when to send power to make the vehicle go. A damaged transfer case is like having a confused vehicle, and having good tires will prevent this from happening.

Create Alignment Issues

If your tires are uneven, it's difficult for the car to drive smoothly down the road, and it can cause the steering alignment to get off track. When you go to turn the wheel it may not go as you direct. The uneven tires will jerk the car around and can't absorb shock as well as new tires, and the steering wheel can get off track.

If you can't afford to purchase brand new tires for your car, ask the tire shop if they have any used tires that are safe. Sometimes the tire provider, one like Collier Goodyear Car Care Center, will have tires with 75 percent of their thread or something similar, and they are less expensive. If you only need to replace a couple of your tires, make sure that you have the tires balanced and rotated when they are put on. This is ensures that they are on properly and they are going to wear the tread evenly while you are driving.
